I wish you would do something means that they can still do it, it’s not too late.
I wish you did something means they cannot do it anymore, it is too late.

"I wish you would do something" means there's still time to do something.
Saying "I wish you did something" sounds like you mean I wish you had done something (in the past ... but now the time for doing it has passed.)

saying I wish you did something is implying that you're talking to them in the future and saying I wish you would do something is telling them to do something now

My textbook says that ‘We use wish to say that we regret something, that something is not as we would like it. When we use wish in this way, we use the past, but meaning is present.’
And ‘We often use I wish... would to complain about a situation.’
So, I thought that saying ‘I wish you would do something’ sounds like I complain someone because he doesn’t do anything.
