If it's in reference to you doing an action it generally means don't do that action and forget about it because the action is impossible.
Usually it's used as an insult, implying that you aren't capable of doing something when you are.
e.g. "Have you fed the cat yet?"
"No, I'll do it now."
"Don't bother I'll do it myself."

But sometimes it's just used informally to just indicate that something actually isn't possible.

e.g. Trying to open a door that is locked. "Don't bother, that door is locked."

It can be used to be dismissive of an action too. Think of it as meaning "there is no point."
So like: There is no point, that door locked.
There is no point in you feeding the cat, because you're useless and should have done it already, so I'll do it instead.

There is no point in apologising, I'm still angry and don't want to hear it.
