In the midst of is an older, more "poetic" way of saying in the middle of. It is used more for time and circumstance. For instance, "I was in the midst of a life changing even." In the middle of is more common, and does describe placement, as in, the table was in the middle of the room, or the second child in a family of three is "the middle child."

I was told someone says that "midst" means "right in the center." So, "midst" is more emphasized expression of "middle." Is this a wrong idea? They are just different in the time thing?

@mingming_ming they both mean right in the center, but midst means you are right in the middle of doing something... sort of figuratively surrounded by it.

In the midst of and in the middle of mean you are doing something of something happened while another event is happening. Maybe not exactly in the middle. For instance, I was in the midst/middle of fixing my car when he came to my house. Maybe it took two hours to fix my car. This means that somet8me during those two hours he came. Not that he came after 1 hour

There are two uses of in the middle of that can be replaced by in the midst of (which, as noted, sounds a bit older/literary): in a group of people ("in the midst of a crowd"), or during something ("in the midst of a crisis"), but you cannot use it where you might say "in the middle of the table," when the meaning is about the relative locations of objects.

@dpc you mean "midst" is only used to talk about something figurative or symbolic, not about the location?
