@BWbun87: if you're grade 9 or more, you don't need to learn French but if you're under grade 9, you do

yes every where in Canada you must learn French while in elementary school, but in highschool you can learn what ever language you want. British English is fine most people would understand what you say.

Canadians are taught basic French in elementary/primary school, but it's usually not compulsory to study French after that. Many Canadians forget how to speak even basic French by the time they reach adulthood (like around age 18).
In most of Canada, the primary language is English and only some people speak French regularly. There are also some places where English is used almost exclusively and French is rarely used.
However, there are also a few select regions in Canada (like Quebec) where the majority of people speak French fluently and only some people speak English fluently.
> "By the way, is it ok to speak British English in Canada?"
Yes. Canadian English itself is a hybrid/mix between US/American English and UK/British English. It shouldn't be a problem if you speak or write in British English. Many Canadian English spellings are in fact British English spellings (e.g. "centre", "colour", etc.)
However, there are some British words and expressions that Canadians may not be familiar with. Also, there are a few words that have different meanings in Britain versus Canada/US.

I came to Canada in second year of high school and I never had to take any French courses. I believe once you reach high school, it's not mandatory.
- Paese o regione Canada
It is mandatory if you live near Quebec, such as Ontario or New Brunswick. If you live nearer the West coast, it's often taught, but it is not mandatory there. French classes are offered at almost any school in Canada, though.
Also, Canadian English is this weird mush of American and British English - we say "tire" and "cookie", but also "colour" and "metre". This is why I have both British and American Englishes set as fluent, because I can switch between both easily.

From grade 4-7 it is compulsory. And then you have to learn it in grade 8 and 9, if you don't then you have to learn it in grade 10 again.
