@Tokyoningen: indians from other states stereotype all south indians as tamilians regardless of what southern state they belong to ( especially by north Indians)
tamilians are said to be self centered, selfish and quiet. however that's not always the case. the darker skin is also generalized making them victims of racism in north india sometimes. they're also generalized to be brainy yet orthodox. they're known to be very particular about caste differences and vegetarianism also are known to have a sharp tongue and no ethical mannerisms

@such1234: I didn't know that people from North, call all southerners as Tamilians. You mean even the Malayalalis are called Tamilians?
And also it's very irrational to classify a whole society as self centered or selfish. There are just as many number of selfish and self centered people in south as there are in the north. I am a South Indian from Tamil Nadu. And I see quite a lot of variations in behavior and characteristics of people as a whole, as I am particularly interested in researching the behaviors of different people (not a professional though, just a hobby).
And it's also a fallacy to say most people are quiet. I believe you are saying this from your personal experience with some southerners staying in north. It's a common human behavior we experience, when we move to other places.
And I am surprised that they are racially attacked. That's sad to hear.
And yes, the caste is a big problem here. Almost every Hindu abodes by the rules of his own caste, which create problems on a daily basis.
The Brahmins are mostly vegetarians, and they have an upper hand in most of the authorities over here.
And the 'sharp toungue' you mentioned is actually true, which can be seen even with some educated individuals, although it mostly resides by the uneducated fellows. Also the people from slums show bad manners among themselves sometimes, but mostly are kind to others, especially foreigners.

I am not saying anything from personal experience. and you don't have to justify anything about tamilians. I have absolutely no prejudices against any south Indian or north Indians for the record. I have lived in a lot of places and I answered that according to my observations. I am sorry if that offended you.

To be fair... of course stereotypes are often not true... but my question in this topic is what the stereotypes are.. not how the people really are ^_^. Truth is; I married someone from Tamil Nadu; and I really want to know more about Indian cultures. But most of the information I get are one-sided (only from 1 person from tamil nadu); so... it helps to hear what others have to say ^_^/

what I just said are the regular stereotypes. personally I have met quite a few people from tn and to be fair they're both conservative and free. they're logical and stubborn but then again it varies from person to person. so why not just be open with your spouse and enjoy your life.
I wish you a happy married life. :)

@such1234: I didn't get offended. I was just trying to clarify the stereotypes made on southern people. I didn't mean you classified so and so. I just explained why it is wrong what people are upto these days with regards to stereotypes.
In fact, I respect your opinions and it is your right to post what other people have to say about Tamilians or any other society for that matter. I had no intention to offend or hurt anybody. Hope you get the purpose of me posting that reply. :)
@Tokyoningen: You are welcome, my friend. And happy married life :)

@Tokyoningen:
Sharp tongue
Introvert not really friendly.
Could be intimidating (although they are friendly once you get to know them)
They intelligent and well educated
But could look like a don or as angry person
(because of south Indian movies you know)
I have friends form tn they are actually very nice people but you have to know them first..
Sorry if i offend anyone... :) :)
