I am Russian so I feel among my own people when I am surrounded by Russians.
I wonder how it feels being American since it's not just one nation.
Is it about the state, area, culture or what?
in other words, among what people do you feel that they are your people?

I think it depends on the person.
In my case: I have travelled a lot & love to learn, but the area in which I live is full of people who have never gone anywhere or learnt about different cultures, so I don't feel I fit in here at all. I don't know that I feel 'American' except when I am suffering from being American (high cost of health-care, worrying about gun violence, being reminded of the current president, etc). I tend to look at things from a more global perspective than the people here, & I love learning about other cultures. The only places in America I've ever felt like I almost fit in are in big northern or eastern cities like NYC or Denver (Colorado), where there are a lot of immigrants & different types of people - not just one type everywhere - & where acceptance of differences is more common.
From what I've seen of & heard from the people in smaller, rural, & primarily white communities, it seems like they feel 'American' just by living in the US. They feel most American when surrounded by others who look and act like them. They also tend to look negatively on outsiders, however, & are quick to judge how 'American' someone -else- is by what the person thinks or feels and whether they agree.
This is my personal experience, but I'm curious what others have to say! 🙂
