They are quite different. 
In general, public schools in China have stricter dress codes imposed on their students.  Many Chinese public schools prohibit their students from wearing makeup, earrings, or bracelets. Some schools even don’t allow their female students to have long hair. Also, having a boyfriend/girlfriend is discouraged in most Chinese schools . While in American public schools, students are free to wear makeup and any kind of accessories , and they are allowed to choose their own hairstyle. 
Moreover, most Chinese schools require their students to stay after school to clean their own classrooms, which is known as ”值日生制度” in Chinese. The duties include but not limit to : sweeping and wiping the floor; wiping the windows and blackboard with a wet cloth; and emptying the trash. Students will get punished if they escape from their duty. Whereas this is not the case in American schools; it is the professional cleaners who clean the classrooms, not the students. I think America schools can learn from the Chinese schools in this regard. 
Besides, Chinese public schools tend to emphasize more on rote memorizations, mathematics and Physical Science. Using a calculator when taking tests is regarded as cheating in most regions in China (with Shanghai being the only exception). Both Chemistry and Physics are required courses in most Chinese middle schools. Art and Music classes are occasionally being cancelled to make room for some “more important” subjects such as Chinese, Maths, English  and Science.
Another major difference is that American high schools tend to provide more options for their students. Most American high schools have a long list of elective courses for their students to choose from, which ranging from art to sciences ;from psychology to IT. Students can choose the level of difficulty of their classes base on their abilities and goals. Whereas in most Chinese high schools, students are required to choose 3 courses out of only 6 electives, which includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Political Science and Geography. This is probably due to the fact that America is a wealthier country than China, therefore American high schools can afford to provide more electives for their students. 
IMO, the only similarity is that students in both countries need to work hard in order to enter a decent university. 
America is a developed country whereas China is still a developing country, that alone makes a lot of differences. I believe with the economic growth of China, Chinese education system will improve over time. I am not saying that America education system is certainly better than the one in China, they are just different.  Generally speaking, Chinese students tend to be more hardworking than their American counterparts, while American students have more times and freedom to explore their passions.
